Maroon Bells in fall

On my road trips through the state, I’ve discovered the best of Colorado: road trip highlights and hidden gems, which I’d like to share with you. Colorado is a state where you can drive a few hours and go from alpine peaks to desert dunes to historic cliff dwellings.

If you’re planning a big Colorado road trip, these are the stops and detours you don’t want to miss. This guide covers the best places to visit, easy hikes, and my personal photography spots that you’ll love to see when you visit Colorado.

Let’s start from Denver.

1. Denver

denver city, colorado

Denver is usually the first stop for most travelers, especially if you fly into Denver International Airport. The city is super easy to navigate, and it’s a fun place to spend a day or two before heading into the mountains. I like using Denver to stock up on snacks, charge everything, and get used to the elevation. The city has a mix of trendy neighborhoods, good coffee, and surprising murals tucked everywhere. It’s also home to some great museums if you want something low-key before the big hikes begin.

Things to Do in Denver

  • Walk around RiNo (River North Arts District) for colorful murals and coffee shops.
  • Visit Union Station: it’s touristy but beautiful.
  • Stop by Red Rocks Amphitheatre (only 25 minutes away).Explore Denver Art Museum.
  • Try local craft breweries if you enjoy beer.

2. Boulder

Boulder is one of those places where you immediately feel the relaxed energy. It’s a college town, but also a nature town, and the Flatirons are impossible to ignore: they rise right above the neighborhoods like giant sandstone waves. I usually stop in Boulder for a quick meal and a stretch before heading toward Estes Park. If you love small towns with a young vibe and big mountain views, you’ll feel right at home here.

Things to Do in Boulder

  • Walk along Pearl Street for shops and restaurants.
  • Visit Chautauqua Park (most iconic Boulder spot).
  • Grab coffee at Ozo Coffee or Boxcar.

  • Flatirons from Chautauqua Park
  • Boulder Creek Path
  • Flagstaff Mountain Lookout

3. Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the most beautiful stops on any Colorado road trip. The air is crisp, the mountains feel close, and every turn on the trail makes you stop for pictures. Altitude is real here, so take it easy if you’re coming straight from sea level.

  • Drive Trail Ridge Road (seasonal; usually open June–October)
  • Explore Moraine Park for wildlife.
  • Visit the Alpine Visitor Center.

Easy Hikes

4. Grand Lake

Grand Lake is quieter than Estes Park, and honestly, that’s why I love it. It feels like a small lake town tucked at the edge of the mountains. The lake is peaceful with wooden docks, and the sunsets are amazing here. If you want a place to breathe and unwind, this town is perfect.
