Thanksgiving is always the best time to travel in California when the weather starts to cool, making it easy to escape from a busy life.
Living in California for 14 years, I’ve spent Thanksgiving in so many different ways. Some years it was all about the big family dinner in Orange County. Other times I’d slip away for a weekend with my friend or just enjoy a wonderful buffet in the local city.
Whether you want to be in the heart of a busy city or disappear into the mountains, California makes it easy to celebrate however you want. Just keep in mind: Thanksgiving is busy. People are flying home, parks are full, and hotels book fast. I always tell people to plan early: book your stay, your rental car, and check restaurants for holiday menus because everyone is trying to get Thanksgiving dinner at the same time.
Here are 18 Thanksgiving getaways in California you’ll love, whether you’re road-tripping solo, bringing your partner, or meeting up with family for a little adventure.
1. San Francisco
San Francisco during Thanksgiving always feels extra festive to me. The city starts decorating for the holidays early, so by late November Union Square already has the giant Christmas tree up, the ice rink is open, and cable cars are wrapped in wreaths. If you’re someone who likes city energy with a little holiday sparkle, San Francisco is perfect.

The best places for Thanksgiving Dinner:
- The Cliff House – Classic Coastal Dining
- Waterbar – Seafood and Skyline Views
- One Market Restaurant – A Local Favorite
- The Fairmont Hotel – Elegant Holiday Buffet
- Foreign Cinema – A Modern Twist on Thanksgiving
2. Lake Tahoe
Lake Tahoe is a beautiful place and peaceful for Thanksgiving. If you’re lucky, the mountains get their first dusting of snow right around late November, and suddenly Tahoe feels like a winter postcard comes to life. If the snow hits early, you can ski at places like Palisades, Heavenly, Northstar, or Kirkwood. And even if there’s no powder yet, Tahoe is still gorgeous, think crisp trails, quiet beaches, and hot chocolate overlooking the lake.

There are some options for Thanksgiving Buffet in Lake Tahoe:
- ThanksGiving Dinner at Palisades. They had a delicious grand buffet with carving stations, holiday side dishes, and desserts that make you want to go back.
- Granlibakken Tahoe: also a good option
- Manzanita at The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe
3. Yosemite National Park

Yosemite in November is like stepping into a painting. You might get lucky and see Yosemite Valley covered in a light layer of snow: one of the prettiest scenes in California. Thanksgiving is an amazing time to hike because the light is soft all day and the crowds are lighter (except Thanksgiving weekend, so plan ahead).
Trails like the Valley Loop and Mist Trail look extra photogenic this time of year. After hiking, you can treat yourself to Thanksgiving dinner at The Ahwahnee, which does an iconic holiday feast every year. Even if you don’t stay there, it’s worth going for the experience.
4. Palm Springs

If you want sunshine instead of sweaters, go to Palm Springs. Thanksgiving here means blue skies, warm afternoons, and crisp desert evenings. It’s the kind of place where you can spend the morning riding the Aerial Tramway, wander around admiring mid-century modern houses in the afternoon, then enjoy a holiday dinner by the pool.
A lot of restaurants do special Thanksgiving menus: Indian Wells, Palm Desert, and Palm Springs all have great options. You’ll also find plenty of spas offering holiday weekend specials if you want a little self-care getaway.

5. Napa Valley & Sonoma Valley

There’s something about wine country in November that feels like a warm hug. The vineyards turn golden, the air is chilly in the morning, and then warms just enough in the afternoon to enjoy a long, slow wine tasting. It’s one of my favorite Thanksgiving getaways when I want something peaceful and scenic.
Restaurants like Dry Creek Kitchen in Healdsburg offer full Thanksgiving menus, and some wineries stay open for tastings on the holiday itself.
6. Carmel-by-the-Sea

Carmel always feels like a storybook village, but during Thanksgiving it becomes straight-up magical. Carmel is perfect if you want a coastal Thanksgiving without the crowds of more popular beaches. It’s quiet, cozy, and full of charm.
Bernadus Lodge and Spa offer Thanksgiving Grand Buffet.
7. Mendocino

Mendocino might be the most underrated Thanksgiving getaway in California. This place is peaceful even during the summer, but in November? You basically get the whole coastline to yourself. Picture dramatic cliffs, empty beaches, and redwood trails where you can wander for hours.
There are a few local restaurants offering Thanksgiving meals, but what I love most is that Mendocino feels like somewhere you go to truly unwind.
8. Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara is perfect when you want something relaxed but still polished. The weather is almost always beautiful, the beaches are wide and sandy, and there’s plenty of shopping and wine tasting. Thanksgiving week is also full of seasonal events, from holiday workshops to wine tours, and on the big day, there’s even a Thanksgiving 4-Miler run.
Restaurants and hotels go all out for Thanksgiving dinner. If you want something fancy, El Encanto and Rosewood Miramar Beach both serve full holiday feasts.
9. San Diego

If you’re chasing sunshine, San Diego never misses. Thanksgiving here means warm beaches, outdoor brunches, and tons of holiday activities. There are Turkey Trots all over the city, from Balboa Park to Coronado, and many restaurants offer Thanksgiving menus.
And you don’t want to miss the Thanksgiving buffet dinner cruise by Hornblower Cruise
Hotel del Coronado hosts one of the most well-known buffets in California, complete with live music. If you want a laid-back but festive Thanksgiving, this is it.
Or Golden Corral is the best place for gathering family member
10. Catalina Island

Catalina in November is quiet in the best way. The summer tourists are gone, the weather is mild, and the whole island feels peaceful. You can hike, kayak, rent a golf cart, or just eat your way through Avalon.
A few restaurants offer Thanksgiving menus, and most attractions stay open. Just book your ferry early because holiday weekends fill up fast.

11. Mammoth Lakes

Mammoth is a classic Thanksgiving destination if you’re hoping for early snow. If skiing is your thing, this is your spot. If not, there’s still plenty to do: the Turkey Trot, the annual tree lighting in the Village, and cozy restaurants offering holiday dinners.
I love Mammoth in Fall season because even without snow, the crisp alpine air makes the trip feel festive.
12. Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree in November is dreamy. Cooler temps mean you can hike all day without melting, and the desert light around sunset is unreal. Thanksgiving weekend gets busy, so book your campsite or accommodation early.
There aren’t many places serving full Thanksgiving dinners, but you can pre-order meals from local grocery stores and enjoy a “desert picnic” feast. It’s simple, but unforgettable.

13. Half Moon Bay

Half Moon Bay is the pumpkin capital of the world, after all. It’s great for surfers, shoppers, and people who love tiny coastal towns with great food.
If you want a luxurious Thanksgiving experience, go to The Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay. Their brunch and dinner spreads are famous.
14. Big Sur

Big Sur is one of those places that makes you slow down without trying. The coastline is breathtaking in November, and the mood feels peaceful and reflective, perfect for Thanksgiving. You can camp, glamp, or stay at a hotel overlooking the cliffs.
Hotels like Big Sur Lodge and Big Sur Bakery serve holiday meals, and you’ll be eating surrounded by redwoods or ocean views.
And Ventana Big Sur offer Thanksgiving brunch buffet, perfect for a getaway trip.
15. Los Angeles

If you want sunshine and a huge list of things to do, LA is it. You get the beach, the mountains, incredible food, and big holiday events. The Pershing Square ice rink opens right before Thanksgiving, the Hollywood Christmas Parade happens that weekend, and don’t miss out the Enchanted: Forest of Light in Descanso Garden
Restaurants offer everything from luxe tasting menus to casual family-style meals. And if you want something different, try the Thanksgiving cruise in Marina del Rey, it’s such a fun experience.
16. Laguna Beach

Laguna Beach is one of my favorite SoCal spots for a peaceful Thanksgiving by the ocean. The crowds calm down in November, the weather is still warm enough for beach walks, and the sunsets look like someone painted the sky with pastels.
You can spend the morning wandering through the art galleries, grab a coffee near Main Beach, then treat yourself to a Thanksgiving meal at one of the oceanfront hotels.
Montage Laguna Beach often host special holiday dinners with menus that feel fancy but still comforting. And Driftwood Kitchen is also a good option to go for a Thanksgiving buffet in Laguna Beach.
17. Newport Beach

Newport Beach is perfect if you want a Thanksgiving that feels a little bit luxurious but still relaxed. Think yacht-lined harbors, waterfront restaurants, and neighborhoods already decorated for the upcoming holiday boat parades. Thanksgiving morning is full of action here, there’s the annual Turkey Trot on Balboa Island, and locals love biking or walking the boardwalk before their big meal.
Plenty of restaurants offer Thanksgiving menus, from Balboa Bay Resort to The Winery Restaurant & Bar. If you want something unique, you can even book a Thanksgiving dinner cruise around the harbor. It’s calm, scenic, and a fun way to avoid the dishes afterward.
18. Huntington Beach

If you want to spend Thanksgiving with your toes in the sand, Huntington Beach is the perfect pick. Locals love starting the day with a long walk, riding a bike or a beach run before heading home for the holiday meal.
The weather is usually warm enough to sit outside, and downtown has a lively but laid-back energy over the holiday weekend. Some of the oceanfront resorts: like Paseo and Hyatt Regency, offer buffet-style Thanksgiving dinners with ocean views. If you want something more casual, grab takeout and enjoy a sunset picnic on the sand.
Huntington Beach has that comforting, homey feeling that makes Thanksgiving weekend feel easy, slow, and full of gratitude.
I hope this guide gives you some inspiration for your holiday plans this year. California is full of beautiful Thanksgiving getaways: cozy, sunny, peaceful, and full of holiday sparkle. No matter what kind of trip you’re craving, there’s a spot on this list that’ll fit the mood perfectly.
